Brief

An open competition for a covered market with 60 stalls, a food court and a space for community events.

Site

A corner site in an old neighborhood of timber houses, now surrounded by towers.

Approach

A raised timber roof floats above the stalls on slender steel columns, so air moves freely underneath. Rain is collected in a central channel and kept for washing down. Stalls are simple timber frames that traders can fit out themselves.

Outcome

Shortlisted, 2024, with Studio Rimba of Kuala Lumpur as local partner.

Plan, 1:200

Raised view under the edge of the timber roof over a regular grid of market stalls and aisles.

Under the roof edge, over the stalls.
