Brief

A family from New York wanted a house for weekends and summers, with a library, a studio and rooms for visiting children and friends.

Site

Thirty acres of meadow and woodland in the hills of Litchfield County, crossed by an old fieldstone wall.

Approach

The house is a single story, set along the line of the stone wall. Living rooms face the meadow; bedrooms face the woods. Walls are fieldstone from the site and charred cedar. A green roof keeps the house low in the landscape.

Outcome

Completed in 2024.

Plan, 1:200

Raised view along the long low house of fieldstone and charred cedar, with a green roof, the meadow on one side and woods on the other.

Along the house, meadow to one side and woods to the other.

Inside the living room under a white oak ceiling, with a full-height glass wall looking onto the meadow.

The living room, open to the meadow.

Section through the living room, 1:50

The white oak library wall with a single reading chair, low sun crossing the oak floor from the glass wall to the meadow.
Detail of the fieldstone wall meeting charred black cedar boards, with meadow grasses and goldenrod at the green roof edge above.
The long low house at dusk along the old stone wall, its glass walls glowing across the meadow below the wooded hills.
